Lando Norris narrowly beat team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the fastest time in the dying seconds of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the title advantage from Piastri by just one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, topped the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before the sprint shootout set to begin at 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the other racer in the points battle, trailing 36 points behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his Red Bull team opted for a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the only driver to go off, albeit lightly, when he lost control at Turn Four early in the session. The Japanese slid over the track edges before spinning across the gravel trap, and was fortunate to escape with just a light touch of the barrier. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the very end of the session, turning around through the fast downhill Mergulho turn leading to the final bend on to the pit straight. Hamilton wrapped up in 19th, just behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's car in third, 0.619secs off Piastri's best. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
