Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to contest particular rulings from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
